We long to hear God’s voice. I know I do. When we come to a fork in the road, or moment of crisis we cry out to God and would love to see a banner in the sky, or hear the audible voice of God. Especially these days we hunger to hear God’s voice. Is it right to take the vaccination or not? Is this the right job for me? Is this the time to get pregnant again?
So many questions and we need answers.
When we are in relationship with someone we enter into each other’s space and we speak to each other. When we have a personal relationship with God, He wants to speak to us. That is what a relationship is all about. In Genesis God spoke the world into existence and in Revelations God spoke to the apostle John about the end times. You and I are made in the image and DNA of the God who speaks.
God speaks. We speak.
A mistake most of us make is that our approach to hearing God’s voice is for information. But God wants a relationship. God’s desire, and reason for His delays is that He is waiting for us to draw closer and deeper. He withholds himself enough to keep us seeking.
In the Old Testament God spoke clearly in different ways. Through a burning bush, a donkey, a finger writing on the wall, a fleece, the cloud and fire, through casting lots through prophets and many other ways. Today God speaks to us through a still small voice through the Holy Spirit within us. But we must remember, the promise of His voice isn’t simply for the purpose of communication, it’s for communion. “Be still and know…(Psalm 46:10) is the only way to hear God.
God rarely shouts, we need to be quiet to hear Him.
God wants our heart and He will answer our requests in wonderful and unusual ways. Of course God speaks through His word, but He also speaks through other people, through a podcast, an article, a quote on a coffee cup, a friend, a Facebook post, a billboard and a favourite book. Because we have the mind of Christ within us (2 Corinthians 2:16) mostly God speaks through impressions in our heart and mind that simply won’t go away. Listen to them, pay attention, and test them. Even if you didn’t hear correctly God will re-direct you until you’ve found that sweet spot of knowing you are aligned with God’s will.
Above all, seek Him and His voice will become like a megaphone, louder than all your distractions and other clamouring voices. And often that voice or answer doesn’t come until the very last minute, but it will come. What is one question you want to ask God today? Ask Him and wait expectantly.
