UNLEASHING THE K.I.S.S. MARRIAGE-“Home Depot and Tool Time”

Posted: September 11, 2011

When Tool Place opened up in Kelowna, my son-in-law Tim said that, “the highlight of his visit would have been to spend one whole day at Tool Place.” My brain almost ached when I heard that; because that would have been absolute torture for me. I don’t like tools, gadgets or putting together anything that involves a tool or piece of machinery. Tonight on TV I watched Extreme Makeover and again, I saw the look of delight and the adrenaline high on the men’s faces as they drove huge semis right through someone’s home.  I completely understand now; this is what excites men and gets their jets going.

So ladies, let’s not be surprised when you get a text message from your husband or significant other the day before Valentine’s Day that says, “Hey Honey, what can I get you for Valentine’s Day?” We have to understand that this is not their escape hatch, but a desperate plea for help.  Some men (generally speaking) simply do not know what a “romantic” gift looks or feels like.

We have to understand that one of the most romantic gifts you can give a man is to go along with him to Home Depot, dig around in the tool section, barbecues or machinery and then stop off for a cup of coffee or another beverage of his choice. He just loves you hanging out with him and it delights him to see the look of approval or excitement on your face when he shows the latest and greatest drill bits (or whatever). So when it comes to fulfilling your romantic dreams and desires, you might have to help him. In this area, you might have to take the lead and guide him through your romantic visions.  It’s awkward for men to order flowers, spend time at the perfume counter or rummage through the lingerie department.

Just because he doesn’t give you something you really want, or spend time or money to fulfill your desires; doesn’t mean he doesn’t love you. He probably just doesn’t know what to do.  I have had women tell me their husbands gave them vacuum cleaners or tools and gadgets; and it made them feel hurt and misunderstood. From a man’s point of view, they probably thought it was something you could really use and that you would be delighted.  Men love to fix things; women love to feel good.

So the next time your husband tells you he needs to run to Rona or Home Depot; tell him you’d love to go along. It will probably make his day. Next time a special event comes along like your Birthday, Christmas or Valentine’s Day; help him navigate through this unfamiliar territory. Not through hints, sticky notes or sarcastic remarks.  Flat out tell him; he’ll love you for it.

Does that mean, the next time we come to visit, I have to spend a whole day at the Tool Place? 🙂 Thanks for your words of wisdom, it is important to tell men exactly what we want sometimes. I’ve had to learn this over many years of marriage.
